Tips for Picking the Best School for ESL Courses in NJ

English is the third most commonly spoken language in the world and is the language which is heard the most in the United States today. Many of the students who we are proud to teach here at the New Jersey English Center choose to enroll in ESL courses in NJ to learn English for a number of reasons, whether those be for business, to gain entrance into one of the top schools located only minutes from our doorstep, or for pleasure. If you fit into any one of those categories and are debating which school is best for you, we have put together a quick list of what you should look for in an ESL study program:

Choose a Program Which Meets Your Goals

Our school offers a variety of ESL courses which cater to the different needs of our students. Before settling on one school, make sure that the ESL program being offered will help you excel in your area of interest. For example, many schools offer more relaxed study programs which are geared towards teaching students how to be able to speak English in casual settings. Others will offer more in-depth and formal training, such as how to compose an essay and how to write business proposals.

Talk to Former and Current Students

One of the best ways to determine whether or not the school you are considering for ESL is right for you is to speak to former students and those who are currently enrolled in the school. Ask them about their experience, their learning experience, and whether or not they would recommend the school. If you stop by our school for a tour (which we highly recommend!) we will introduce you to some of our students so you can ask them all of your questions about learning and student life here at the New Jersey English Center.

Ask about the Teachers

The teachers at the school you are considering should be qualified to teach the ESL courses you will be taken. Apart from a teacher’s formal training, ask questions such as:

  • How long has the teacher been teaching ESL courses?
  • Has the teacher worked overseas?
  • Does the teacher speak another language?

Don’t Forget about the Location

We feel that location is an important factor when it comes to choosing the right school for learning English, which is why we chose for the New Jersey English Center to be located less than 15 minutes away from New York City and Manhattan. The school should be located near numerous opportunities for you to test your English skills on a daily basis. It should also be situated to nearby cultural activities and opportunities so that you can get a true feeling of what American life is all about.
